Our intensive rehabilitative program is carried out through hospitalisation in the Health Centre, in order to interrupt the cycle which gives origin to, and maintains, the disorder. This approach to treatment deals with both the physical and psycho-social aspects of each specific disorder.
The treatment plan is developed on two levels: the first treats eating problems, binge-eating, ways of compensating and body weight, while the second deals with psychological issues such as self-consciousness, self-control, perfectionism and difficulties in managing interpersonal and family relationships. Almost all patients prefer to start their treatment by focusing on psychological issues, but given that malnutrition affects normal psychological functions, it is essential that eating habits and weight problems are treated simultaneously. In order to embark on the program the patient must be motivated to change. This motivation can grow and develop, through various phases. Those affected by Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa may still be at a stage where ‘engagement’ is not yet possible due to insufficient motivation. In this case, before admission to hospital, it is better to begin an outpatient process with a view to increasing their motivation.
